Towing in Fabens: roads, rules and where the car goes
Cars break down along I-10 near the FM-793 interchange, the main highway access for Fabens. SH-20 and Main Street are the commercial spine, with fuel stops and motels where a driver might pull off with a flat or a dead battery. FM-76, also called Camp Street or North Loop Drive, connects Fabens to Clint and Socorro and is listed by TxDOT as an emergency alternate route for I-10. Farm trucks and equipment serving the cotton fields and pecan orchards are a constant presence on these rural roads, and a loaded rig or a tractor can need heavy-duty recovery. The old Fabens-Caseta bridge site still confuses some drivers who don't know the port closed in 2014, and they may make a U-turn on a rural road.
Fabens is in unincorporated El Paso County, so the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the law enforcement agency for the area. A Sheriff-towed car may end up at the Sheriff's contracted tow lot or the EPCSO lot at 12501 Montana Ave., Building F. Recovery is by appointment with the EPCSO Evidence & Abandoned Motor Vehicle Section at 3850 Justice St., (915) 273-3800 ext. 5431, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because Fabens is outside El Paso city limits, the city fee caps in Chapter 12.54 do not apply. The Texas TDLR statewide maximums apply unless the county sets lower ones: $272 for vehicles 10,000 lb or less, $380 for 10,001 to 25,000 lb, and $489 per unit up to $978 over 25,000 lb for a nonconsent tow. A drop fee can be up to $135, $190 or $244 if the vehicle is fully hooked but not yet gone; if it's not fully hooked, release is free. Storage at a Texas VSF runs $22.85 per day for 25 feet or less and $39.99 over 25 feet.
Monsoon season brings short, intense storms and flash flooding. About 12 inches of moving water can carry a small car, and roads next to the Rio Grande levee flood and turn muddy. Spring is dust and wind season, with low visibility on I-10. Heat shortens battery life, and the normal July high is 96.1 F. Tell the operator your exact location, which road and cross street, and whether you're on the shoulder, in a field, on a levee road or in water. Say what you're driving and whether it's loaded, since weight class affects the equipment needed. If you're near the I-10 and FM-793 interchange, mention the direction of travel.
