RV and Trailer on El Paso roads
RV towing around El Paso runs into the same roads and weather as any other tow, just with more weight and length. I-10 is the main east-west line, and Loop 375 wraps the city on three sides: Border Highway and Cesar Chavez on the south, Joe Battle on the east, Transmountain on the north. US-54 Patriot Freeway and Spur 601 Liberty Expressway carry a lot of local traffic. On the surface streets, Mesa Street, Alameda Avenue, Montana Avenue and Dyer Street are where a rig can get into trouble at a light or a tight turn. North Loop Drive is listed by TxDOT as an emergency alternate route for I-10.
Summer heat shortens battery life, and the July normal high is 96.1 F. Monsoon season from July to September brings short, intense storms and flash flooding, and about 12 inches of moving water can carry a small car. Spring dust and wind cut visibility on I-10. Fort Bliss families often keep an RV for weekend desert trips, and a rig that breaks down near post is handled by the operator you hire. On the New Mexico side, Sunland Park, Santa Teresa, Chaparral and Anthony fall under New Mexico rules, not Texas TDLR rules.
How the price works
A tow you request yourself is a consent tow, and the independent operator you hire sets the price. That operator quotes before work starts, so you know the number before you agree. Texas TDLR nonconsent tow caps and storage maximums do not apply to a consent tow you call for yourself. If your RV policy or motor club may cover the tow, call the policy first.
Common questions
Can a tow truck handle my motorhome and my trailer on the same call?
Yes, if your tow vehicle broke down while hooked to a trailer, tell the operator when you call. The operator can send equipment for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. Give the year, make and chassis of the rig so the right truck is sent. Also give the drop-off location, such as an RV service center or dealer, so paperwork and delivery are handled.
What should I tell the operator about my RV or trailer?
Tell the operator the rig's year, make and chassis, and whether it is a Class A, B or C motorhome, a fifth-wheel, a travel trailer, a bumper-pull or a truck camper. Say what failed, such as a blowout, brake failure or a jackknife. Give your exact location on the road, and name the drop-off location you want. A diesel pusher needs a driveline disconnect before towing, so mention that too.
Where does a towed RV or trailer go in El Paso?
That depends on the call. A consent tow you request goes where you and the operator agree, often an RV service center or dealer. If police ordered the tow, the vehicle may go to a storage facility. The City of El Paso Municipal Vehicle Storage Facility is at 11615 Railroad Drive, El Paso, TX 79934, phone (915) 212-0205, open 24 hours. Call the lot first to confirm the vehicle is there.
Do Texas TDLR fee caps apply to my RV tow?
Only if the tow is a nonconsent tow, such as a police-ordered tow outside El Paso city limits. Inside El Paso city limits, City Code Chapter 12.54 caps nonconsent tows. A tow you call for yourself is a consent tow, and the operator you hire sets the price. For a New Mexico-side tow in Sunland Park, Santa Teresa, Chaparral or Anthony, New Mexico rules apply and no Texas figure carries over.
What if my RV breaks down on I-10 during monsoon season?
Get yourself and passengers to a safe spot away from traffic if you can. Call (915) 320-5573 to reach an independent operator who can quote the tow. Monsoon storms from July to September bring flash flooding, and about 12 inches of moving water can carry a small car, so do not drive into water. TxDOT HERO covers parts of I-10, Loop 375 and US-54 on weekdays and weekends, but it is not a tow to a shop.
