Towing in Anthony: roads, rules and where the car goes
Breakdowns in Anthony cluster around the I-10 corridor. The Welcome Center at Mile Marker 1 has separate truck and passenger parking, and long-haul rigs that limped across New Mexico often fail to restart there. The Desert Boulevard frontage roads on both sides of the interstate see their share of stalled cars and trucks. In town, Main Street, Washington Street and Antonio Street carry local traffic, and FM 1905 heads northwest toward New Mexico. The I-10 construction zone from Vinton Road westbound to the state line runs through September 2027 and is a stretch to watch. Pecan harvest season also puts farm equipment on the local roads around the orchards.
Anthony is in El Paso County, so Texas towing law applies on the Texas side. TDLR licenses tow companies, and you can check a license at tdlr.texas.gov/LicenseSearch under Tow Truck Operators. Outside El Paso city limits, TDLR statewide maximums apply unless the city or county sets lower ones: $272 for vehicles 10,000 lb or less, $380 for 10,001 to 25,000 lb, and $489 per unit up to $978 over 25,000 lb for nonconsent tows. A Sheriff tow in unincorporated county goes through the EPCSO Abandoned Motor Vehicle Section at 3850 Justice St., (915) 273-3800 ext. 5431, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cars towed by EPPD go to the city lot at 11615 Railroad Drive, but don't send a driver there unless city police ordered the tow. If the car ends up on the New Mexico side, New Mexico rules apply, and you should call the agency or lot that handled it for fees and release steps.
Tell the operator exactly where you are: I-10 eastbound or westbound, the mile marker or exit, and whether you're in the Welcome Center lot, on Desert Boulevard, or on a town street. Say which state the vehicle is in, because the state line decides which rules and which lot apply. Give the make, model, weight class if you know it, and whether it's front-wheel, rear-wheel, all-wheel drive or an EV, since some vehicles need a flatbed. If you're at the Welcome Center, mention that truck and passenger parking are separate so the operator knows which lot to enter. Watch for monsoon flooding and spring dust storms that cut visibility on I-10.
